US FS FB #23 - The shell is an original WWII McCord Radiator with a front-seam, stainless-steel outer band, and fixed bales. There is no heat stamp visible. When acquired the shell was painted red outside with the original paint inside in poor condition. The shell was stripped to bare metal, primed then painted in olive-drab with a textured outer. When stripped there appeared numerous minor stress cracks around the perimeter; these will not be noticed with the repaint. A new OD3 chinstrap set has been fitted. The rack number 59 has been stencilled at the rear. The liner is an original WW2 high-pressure type manufactured by Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) with the logo and the mould number 23 in the crown. When acquired, the liner was painted white on the outer. It had a decal on the front for City of New York Civil Defence Air Warden. The outer was stripped bare and repainted in olive-drab. The liner retains its original triple-weave OD3 webbing, A washers and rivets. The webbing is marked with a L-F (Lapeer Fabricators Inc.). The shell was fitted with a new sweatband, new neck strap and an original unissued leather chinstrap. The cover is original WW2 era; manufactured no later than 1945. It is a USMC cover without foliage slits and reversible camouflage sides; green/jungle side and brown/beach sides; it is in perfect unissued condition. It has the dragon teeth stitching at the edge of the brown side and the chain stitching at the brown side hem. It has been EGA stamped for intended use in the Korean War. I cut the chinstrap slots. This is a restored WW2 fixed bale helmet shell with a WW2 MSA liner and a fantastic WW2 USMC cover.
