US FS #60 - The shell is an original WWII McCord Radiator with a front seam, stainless steel band and swivel bales. The heat stamp is 871E. The shell retains 85% of its original outer paint and texture. The inside was painted silver; this was stripped to bare metal and repainted in olive drab to protect the cover. The shell is in very good condition with only a single ding in the centre of the crown. A new OD3 chinstrap set has been fitted. The liner is an original WW2, high pressure type manufactured by Westinghouse. The Westinghouse logo and the hard to read digits 41 can be found at the inner crown. When acquired the liner was painted white with the CD, civil defence, symbol (red CD in a white triangle in a blue circle), POLICE WISCONSON on the front and CLARK COUNTY on the right side. I can just see this liner being worn by some cop with a truncheon beating up anti-Vietnam war protestors during the 1960s. The stories these helmets could tell. This liner was stripped back to the bare finish and remains this way. Inside the liner, the original triple-weave khaki webbing, mostly in good condition though the rear strap is a little fragile on one end. The A washers and hardware are original also. One of the webbing strands is factory marked V for the Vogt company. The sweat band, brown leather chinstrap and neck strap are new. The USMC cover is a 100% WW2 original. This cover shows wear and fading due to field use. It has numerous small holes throughout and one of the chinstrap slits has torn out to the edge. This cover has no foliage slits and also has the correct WW2 ‘dragon’ teeth type stitching on the beach (brown) side. The only draw back is that someone, somewhere at some time added EGA stencils to both sides.
