frican #6 - The shell is an original WW2 South African (SA) manufactured version of the British MkII. The shells were made by the Transvaal Steel Pressing Syndicate. This particular example is not date factory stamped with the year, as I have seen on others. Three holes are stamped in the rear rim, designed to accommodate a neck shade or flap. The chinstrap lugs are a square stainless-steel type and are riveted on to the shell. The actual loops for the chinstrap are similar to a Mk II Australian type where the loop is folded over the chinstrap end. This shell was covered in thick brush painted, dark olive-drab. It cleaned up well; the outside was nice and smooth while the inner right was heavily pitted with numerous pinholes. The shell was stripped to bare metal, a light fill applied across the pinholes, primed and painted in a ‘factory’ brown with a textured outer. The helmet liner is a replacement from Soldier of Fortune imported from Wales UK, it has a plastic frame with a vinyl type liner and shoe lace draw string. It is a head size 58 cm. The helmet has been fitted with a replacement spring/web type, khaki chinstrap with steel hardware. An olive-drab cam net has been fitted.
