M40 #33 - Shell: The shell is an original WW2 Model 1940 ‘beaded’ example. Beaded helmets signify those that failed quality control for use as combat helmets; they were then relegated for non-combat purposes: an air defence role. Little of the original paint existed on the outer due to advance rust but the original air defence decal could be seen. Much of the original paint could be seen on the inner though in poor condition. The name ARMINA-FARBER was clearly visible in white ink inside the skirt; the helmet was presumably issued to a female. Only 66 was visible of the maker/size stamp indicating a 66cm shell. The vent-hole shape and the lot number of 1234 would indicate a late 1941 made ET shell (Eisenhuttenwerke, Thale). When acquired the shell was fitted with the outer remnants of a leather liner with spacers and original rivets. The shell was stripped to bare metal, primed and painted in a semi-gloss dark blue. Ironic that this helmet was purchased from Israel. Liner: The liner is a nice replacement M1931 helmet liner, with a zinc outer band. The leather is ink marked as size 59 (59cm head size). The liner has a shoe lace weave, cotton type drawstring while the leather is pig skin. This liner is of the highest quality; imported from the Czech Republic; identical to originals and the best on the market. Chinstrap: The leather chin strap is a very nice replacement with steel hardware; it is soft and pliable; and is marked RB Nr0/0390/0204. Restored Depiction: An air defence decal has been applied to the front.
