Flak Helmet #9 M5 - Shell: The shell is an original WWII M5 Aircrew ‘Flak’ helmet. The heat-stamp at the centre-rear is 1184B. The shell is fitted with two hinged ear flaps; longer than the M3 type with a tapered end and the chinstrap loops on the inner surface. The M5 evidently does not come fitted with the O/D felt pads on the inner surface of the ear flaps. The shell and ear flaps are in excellent condition. When acquired, the helmet was covered in surface rust with evidence of the original flocked paint; there was no original lining or chinstrap. The shell cleaned back nicely; there was no damage and only superficial rust. The helmet was stripped to bare metal, primed then painted in olive drab with a textured outer. Lining: The triple-weave OD3 webbing in this helmet is improvised from a M1 replica webbing set. Original A washers have been used and the webbing is mounted to the shell using small bolts. The adjustable sweatband is a replica. The neck strap is an OD7 set improvised from an original piece of webbing and buckle. Chinstrap: I have fabricated an adjustable OD3 web chinstrap for this helmet from an M1 chinstrap; the result appears quite like that of an M3 flak helmet. Decals/Markings: The helmet has the emblem for the United States Army Air Corps stencilled at the front-centre.
