Brit48 1939
Brit48 1939
Brit48 - The shell is an original WW2, British manufactured MkII shell with a stainless-steel banded edge. The stainless-steel factory chinstrap lugs are the MkII type and are stamped, quite small, II/1939. The factory stamps under the flare are HS 13 (Hadfield Ltd, Shefffield – listed as a WW1 helmet shell maker 1916 – 1919). When acquired the shell had no original paint and the surface was in poor condition with some rust pitting in one section and lots of minor dings around the crown; also pressing wrinkles around the perimeter. Perhaps it had a tough Service life. The shell cleaned up quite nicely; it was stripped to bare metal, primed then painted in olive-drab with a coarse outer texture. The helmet liner is an imported replacement from SOF in Wales, it is the early Mk II type with a plastic frame, oval bumper pad, felt spacers and a faux leather liner. It is a head size 58 cm with a new brass top-nut. The helmet has been fitted with an imported replica spring/web type, khaki chinstrap with steel hardware. This helmet represents a basic issue with an olive-drab cam net fitted.
