Aussie67 - The shell is an original WW2, Australian manufactured MkII shell with a raw edge. I have purchased a couple of Australian helmet batches from this one dealer; all of these helmets would have been intact and in good condition when stored but poor storage over the decades has wrecked them. The original brass chinstrap lugs are marked Mk III only; there is no year stamp. The steel lot number was found under the flare as 2517 (the 1 being just visible). When acquired, some of the original paint existed both inside and out; not enough to be retained. Sections of the helmet were affected by surface rust with patches affected by minor rust pitting. Most of the helmet was smooth when cleaned back. The original liner and chinstrap were present but rotted out. The shell cleaned up quite well with no damage. The top-nut is a brass salvaged original rethreaded for a new bolt. This shell was stripped to bare metal; it was then primed and painted in olive-drab with a coarse textured outer surface. The helmet liner is an imported replica from SOF in Wales. It has a synthetic frame with faux leather lining. It is a 58cm head size and is the early Mk II type with the oval shaped bumper pad and felt spacers. The helmet has been fitted with a superb replacement WW2 spring/webbing type khaki chinstrap with steel fittings. The helmet has also been fitted with an original, unissued, WW2 small mesh, hexagonal knit, jungle-green cam net.
